Carl Cox recorded at Atlantico, Rome (15.04.2011)
Always impossible to pigeonhole, Afghan Headspin smash 2011 in the face with one of their biggest releases to date, the bass-packed, genre-busting ‘Going Down’ b/w ‘Ruffneck’ on the mighty Skint.
Both tracks combine elements of breaks, dubstep and electro with plenty of screw-faced, lip-biting attitude. Incredibly engineered and structured for maximum dancefloor impact, both ‘Going Down’ and ‘Ruffnek’ are peak-time smashers riddled with refreshing originality.
‘Going Down’ features the vocals of MC Coppa, and veers dramatically from disgusting dubstep to stomping 4/4 electro without ever losing momentum. Nervous stabs and horror movie soundscapes complete a truly relentless slice of dancefloor energy, while Coppa’s grime-style flow adds a frighteningly devastating top layer to the hard-as-nails backbone.
‘Ruffnek’ straddles an intense punk-rock rave mind-set and pounding electro moments with an incendiary vibe that drives home with an inherent dirty energy. Stubborn 4/4s are interspersed with dubstep influenced chunks and rib-rattling bass that threatens to destroy bassbins at the mere suggestion of being pulled out of your CD wallet.
Riva Starr and Funkagenda hit the Essential Mix decks, recorded live in Miami.
