African Wild dog is a highly endangered species. What a privilege to film this large and very scarce pack out on a hunt down the H1-1 just South of Skukuza in Kruger National Park!
There are an estimated 450 - 500 wild dogs in Kruger, so spotting them is a matter of luck.
Wild dogs hunt every day as they require more meat relative to their size than lions do. Eighty percent of their diet consists of impala, but they do attack bigger game as well, including wildebeest, Kudu, Waterbuck, Reedbuck and sometimes Zebra.
The African wild dog is known by many names, including Cape hunting dog or painted dog. Its scientific name, Lycaon pictus, means “painted wolf,” referring to the animal's irregular, mottled coat, which features patches of red, black, brown, white, and yellow fur. Each animal has its own unique coat pattern, and all have big, rounded ears.
These long-legged canines have only four toes per foot, unlike other dogs, which have five toes on their forefeet.
